My brain also anchored on the fact that the question came from you so there might be some trick or experiment in it, and that carried my thought process away. :)
What a lot of your posts point to is the importance of slowing down and allowing your brain to work on all its levels.
There is a Stanford professor named Robert Sapolsky, and although he talks about a lot of subjects, when he breaks down some of the neurological elements of thought, it becomes really interesting. The idea of the prefrontal cortex vs the "lizard" brain and all that stuff. It is often hard to do in the moment, but I will try to remember "population of Turkey" as a sort of trigger phrase next time I find myself in a situation like this.
I agree. It is interesting to see that in your note advertising this post, the people who answered -correctly- both used a comparison, so they abandoned the premise you proposed and used other numbers to attempt a guess. So, it speaks to the importance of in a salary negotionation, to know roughly what other people with similiar credentials are being paid. This may be common sense, but the actual mechanics of it are important to witness.
Estate liquidation is pure negation of prices. My rule of thumb is to not be the first to say a number. The framework here is a general behavior across settings.
Well, I don't negotiate on behalf of the auction house, but I will be sure to mention this to the people who do. At the very least, it is something to talk about, other than the amount of dirty Polaroids we find in old writing desks.
Great food for thought.

This was really helpful. thank you! I’m not great at negotiating or figuring out how to better leverage myself
It takes just a small different perspective to make a big difference in approach. You will see the rationale in others too.
